The song was already a plenty obscure choice. There is no recording of Woody singing it. It was one of the last songs he wrote. Among the dropped verses: I sent him across that ocean to Yalta and to Tehran. He didn't like Churchill very much and told him man to man. This world was lucky to see him born. Release Date January 12, Genre Folk. Track Listing. One day I started playing the bouzouki and I really liked the sound of it. Because there were four pairs of strings, the chords were kind of easy. And even though it was upside down for me, I could still get chords out of it and I just really loved it. And Andy said, "Ah, take it home with you, the strings are very slack for me. That was the round-bodied Greek bouzouki and [it] became the thing I used most.

It was just before Planxty. I thought 'Wow, that's a talent I haven't seen before. The place was always packed, and the atmosphere was amazing. I think one of the reasons it all felt so exciting was that you couldn't but be aware that they really were breaking new ground, even before Planxty formed.

Something very powerful was germinating. The intricacy and the rhythmic complexity of their arrangements was something really fresh and unheard of — they were literally blowing the dust and cobwebs off some of that material and giving it this sparkling, dancing new life.

It was exhilarating to witness — no other word. It was a magical time. The music was fresh and it sparkled. Every day brought new fun as we rollicked about Pat Dowling's pub and then up to Rynne's cellar to lay down another track.

Prosperous took the suggestions offered by Sweeney's Men and sprinted off with them. Together, they addressed the art of arrangement rather than the formula of genre. And their diversity wasn't just defined by the instrumentation and influences, but also by the variation of time signatures and the creation of counterpoint melodies. They balanced this innovation with a delicate empathy for the music and with old-fashioned musical virtues such as thoughtful singing and intricate playing.

As an acoustic band, they generated their own electricity [ After one of these tours [in ], I went into a recording studio in Northeim , Germany to record an album called Folk Friends 2 [] — others had already made number one.

We had had a couple of rehearsals in Dick's place in Leith and my place in Dublin but mainly of my songs as Dick didn't really decide what he would sing till we got to Germany. He did a fantastic job on my material.

The more so because this was my 'really really complicated' period! Whenever we meet, we always make plans to do another one! Don't know if it will ever happen I had met a number of people in Hungary by this time, whose careers bore a comparison with my own. I mean city people in Budapest who had discovered their folk music, gone out to collect it and formed bands to play it.

I started to play there a lot. I loved the place. I lost my heart to many things there! Andy plays the bouzouki in a very melodic style, using a lot of sustain. He creates this by hitting the strings individually, allowing them to ring rather than using heavy chording. His style involves using intricate counter-melody which greatly fills out the sound, especially when used in a duet or group situation using two bouzoukis or bouzouki and mandolin.

Good examples of this can be found on Planxty albums or Andy's solo album, Rainy Sundays Andy is constantly experimenting, trying to find new sounds. He searches for new chords or chord formations, plays a guitar-shaped bouzouki and uses a wound or covered second A string which results in a much mellower, sweeter tone.

The point being that if we were playing in G or D, there was a top string that could be struck at will. It goes back to Woody Guthrie by way of the Carter Family for me. If you want to play a brush-style Carter family stroke, you need to have that top string able to complement any chord. It is significant, also, that Bill Whelan had been working as a producer of [an] album about two years before Riverdance. It was called East Wind and that entire album was comprised of East European music.

Its making can be ascribed to combining the talents of Davy Spillane and Andy Irvine, and its geographic origins can be ascribed to Irvine who introduced the East European tempo and style onto the Irish traditional scene.

Most of the recordings on this CD were done as if live. I sat in front of microphones with my bouzouki or mandolin in my lap, my harmonica in its holder round my neck, and my drone volume pedal on the floor, under my foot, and played and sang all in one go.

Lost In Your Love - Various - FM Disco Explosion (Vinyl, LP)

On the ever pulsating rhythms you find some nice guitar and piano harmonies and riffs that push the tune into a rock direction without losing the funk spirit.

The vocals and backing vocals often seem to talk to each other and sometimes even are spoken and not sung, even though this was far from the rap music that turned up later.

Don Convay and his female backing singers laugh and shout at each other in a state of joy. Great one to heat up the audience. And in between we have this album. The band goes wild and crazy on this tune and they pour even more fuel to the fire. Don Convay sounds like a white man who wants to sound like a black man, still like a cross between Mick Jagger and Van Morrison with some undefinable aspects.

Anyway, his voice is just beautiful, rich, strong and charismatic whatever he does. He sings in a soft way and then erupts into shouts that speak of a wounded soul. Awesome ballad. They founded a record store called the Record Museum, located in a small storefront at Chestnut Street in downtown Philadelphia. The store, like Times Square, specialized in oldies, and bought ads on Blavat's radio programs.

Their albums started out as oldies compilations, many of them simulated radio shows by Jerry Blavat and other oldies deejays. Both the store and the label flourished. From there, The Record Museum opened a slew of additional stores — ultimately 23 stores in all — and Lost Nite became one of the foremost oldies reissue labels in the country, specializing in doo-wops and group vocals.

Jerry Greene established a new label, Collectables, in , which reissued some of the Lost Nite collections, particularly when CDs became popular. That label has since become the foremost reissue label in the business.

As a reissue label, Lost Nite was not particularly concerned with stereo recordings, and for that reason, most of their albums were mostly or totally rechanneled until quite late by industry standards. Family Guy is a really weird show. Rhino put out a vinyl box of those LPs in , not sure of the sources.

The Soul Part II (John Daly Remix)

Or did it take multiple tries to get to that point? Announcers are part of the soul of a golf game. They're constantly offering commentary, and are essential to the feel of a golf game. They need to be good otherwise playing with them in your ear can be an incredible chore.

Thankfully, Prostroke's announcers aren't too bad. Prostroke also has a myriad of other problems. For instance, the menus were clearly designed before PlayStation Move support was implemented, and now they're barely functional.

Rather than using the great menu control that the Cross Media Bar uses on the PS home screen, Prostroke uses a point-and-click system. This would be fine, if the menu items were big enough. Finally, "Vorderman" keeps up the African theme, sounding like an unheard Auntie Flo production - all heavy percussion, nagging rave stabs and wild electronics. Bugles Of Truth. Here, he grasps that opportunity with both hands, delivering a quicky, offbeat four-tracker that contains his best work to date.

The real standout, though, is opener "Close Encounters of the Casual Kind". Slowed down to a walking tempo, its sumptuous, wide-eyed deep house groove is complimented by some lovingly Balearic pianos. Body Fusion. Here, he offers up a new label and some new sounds. While there are hints at his loopy, hypnotic, ultra compressed past most notably on the late night drum track "MWI" , there's far more swing and a broader range of influences than we've come to expect from the popular Glaswegian.

The flip side "Innaspace" is just as hot, and features some nice and funky Moog action. Definitely a good start to the year for The Revenge. Forever In Their Debt.

Faze Andre Crom. Essentials In Brahma Kumaris , human souls are believed to be incorporeal and eternal. God is considered to be the Supreme Soul, with maximum degrees of spiritual qualities, such as peace, love and purity. In Helena Blavatsky 's Theosophy , the soul is the field of our psychological activity thinking, emotions, memory, desires, will, and so on as well as of the so-called paranormal or psychic phenomena extrasensory perception, out-of-body experiences, etc. However, the soul is not the highest, but a middle dimension of human beings.

Higher than the soul is the spirit, which is considered to be the real self; the source of everything we call "good"—happiness, wisdom, love, compassion, harmony, peace, etc. While the spirit is eternal and incorruptible, the soul is not. The soul acts as a link between the material body and the spiritual self, and therefore shares some characteristics of both.

The soul can be attracted either towards the spiritual or towards the material realm, being thus the "battlefield" of good and evil. It is only when the soul is attracted towards the spiritual and merges with the Self that it becomes eternal and divine. Rudolf Steiner claimed classical trichotomic stages of soul development, which interpenetrated one another in consciousness: [95]. In Surat Shabda Yoga , the soul is considered to be an exact replica and spark of the Divine.

Similarly, the spiritual teacher Meher Baba held that "Atma, or the soul, is in reality identical with Paramatma the Oversoul — which is one, infinite, and eternal Eckankar , founded by Paul Twitchell in , defines Soul as the true self; the inner, most sacred part of each person. Gurdjieff taught that humans are not born with immortal souls but could develop them through certain efforts. The ancient Greeks used the word " ensouled " to represent the concept of being "alive", indicating that the earliest surviving western philosophical view believed that the soul was that which gave the body life.

Francis M. Cornford quotes Pindar by saying that the soul sleeps while the limbs are active, but when one is sleeping, the soul is active and reveals "an award of joy or sorrow drawing near" in dreams. Erwin Rohde writes that an early pre- Pythagorean belief presented the soul as lifeless when it departed the body, and that it retired into Hades with no hope of returning to a body. Drawing on the words of his teacher Socrates, Plato considered the psyche to be the essence of a person, being that which decides how we behave.

He considered this essence to be an incorporeal, eternal occupant of our being. Plato said that even after death, the soul exists and is able to think. He believed that as bodies die, the soul is continually reborn metempsychosis in subsequent bodies. However, Aristotle believed that only one part of the soul was immortal, namely the intellect logos.

The Platonic soul consists of three parts: []. Plato also compares the three parts of the soul or psyche to a societal caste system. According to Plato's theory, the three-part soul is essentially the same thing as a state's class system because, to function well, each part must contribute so that the whole functions well. Logos keeps the other functions of the soul regulated.

In Aristotle's view, the primary activity, or full actualization, of a living thing constitutes its soul. For example, the full actualization of an eye, as an independent organism, is to see its purpose or final cause. This organization between form and matter is necessary for any activity, or functionality, to be possible in a natural being. Using an artifact non-natural being as an example, a house is a building for human habituation, but for a house to be actualized requires the material wood, nails, bricks, etc.

However, this does not imply that a house has a soul. In regards to artifacts, the source of motion that is required for their full actualization is outside of themselves for example, a builder builds a house.

In natural beings, this source of motion is contained within the being itself. The various faculties of the soul , such as nutrition, movement peculiar to animals , reason peculiar to humans , sensation special, common, and incidental and so forth, when exercised, constitute the "second" actuality, or fulfillment, of the capacity to be alive. For example, someone who falls asleep, as opposed to someone who falls dead, can wake up and live their life, while the latter can no longer do so.

Aristotle's discussion of the soul is in his work, De Anima On the Soul. Although mostly seen as opposing Plato in regard to the immortality of the soul, a controversy can be found in relation to the fifth chapter of the third book: in this text both interpretations can be argued for, soul as a whole can be deemed mortal, and a part called "active intellect" or "active mind" is immortal and eternal.

Following Aristotle, Avicenna Ibn Sina and Ibn al-Nafis , an Arab physician, further elaborated upon the Aristotelian understanding of the soul and developed their own theories on the soul.

They both made a distinction between the soul and the spirit, and the Avicennian doctrine on the nature of the soul was influential among the Scholastics. Some of Avicenna's views on the soul include the idea that the immortality of the soul is a consequence of its nature, and not a purpose for it to fulfill. In his theory of "The Ten Intellects", he viewed the human soul as the tenth and final intellect. While he was imprisoned, Avicenna wrote his famous " Floating man " thought experiment to demonstrate human self-awareness and the substantial nature of the soul.

He argues that in this scenario one would still have self-consciousness. He thus concludes that the idea of the self is not logically dependent on any physical thing , and that the soul should not be seen in relative terms , but as a primary given, a substance. Avicenna generally supported Aristotle's idea of the soul originating from the heart , whereas Ibn al-Nafis rejected this idea and instead argued that the soul "is related to the entirety and not to one or a few organs ".

He further criticized Aristotle's idea whereby every unique soul requires the existence of a unique source, in this case the heart. Al-Nafis concluded that "the soul is related primarily neither to the spirit nor to any organ, but rather to the entire matter whose temperament is prepared to receive that soul," and he defined the soul as nothing other than "what a human indicates by saying " I ".

Following Aristotle whom he referred to as "the Philosopher" and Avicenna, Thomas Aquinas —74 understood the soul to be the first actuality of the living body. Consequent to this, he distinguished three orders of life: plants, which feed and grow; animals, which add sensation to the operations of plants; and humans, which add intellect to the operations of animals.

Concerning the human soul, his epistemological theory required that, since the knower becomes what he knows, the soul is definitely not corporeal—if it is corporeal when it knows what some corporeal thing is, that thing would come to be within it. Furthermore, since the rational soul of human beings is a subsistent form and not something made of matter and form, it cannot be destroyed in any natural process.

In his discussions of rational psychology, Immanuel Kant — identified the soul as the "I" in the strictest sense, and argued that the existence of inner experience can neither be proved nor disproved.

We cannot prove a priori the immateriality of the soul, but rather only so much: that all properties and actions of the soul cannot be recognized from materiality. It is from the "I", or soul, that Kant proposes transcendental rationalization, but cautions that such rationalization can only determine the limits of knowledge if it is to remain practical.

Psychologist James Hillman's archetypal psychology is an attempt to restore the concept of the soul, which Hillman viewed as the "self-sustaining and imagining substrate" upon which consciousness rests. Hillman described the soul as that "which makes meaning possible, [deepens] events into experiences, is communicated in love, and has a religious concern", as well as "a special relation with death". Many modern scientists, such as Julien Musolino, hold that the mind is merely a complex machine that operates on the same physical laws as all other objects in the universe.

The search for the soul, however, is seen to have been instrumental in driving the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body, particularly in the fields of cardiovascular and neurology. Neuroscience as an interdisciplinary field, and its branch of cognitive neuroscience particularly, operates under the ontological assumption of physicalism.

In other words, it assumes—in order to perform its science—that only the fundamental phenomena studied by physics exist. Thus, neuroscience seeks to understand mental phenomena within the framework according to which human thought and behavior are caused solely by physical processes taking place inside the brain, and it operates by the way of reductionism by seeking an explanation for the mind in terms of brain activity.

Street 6 Lover Marsh, a tenor saxophonist who toured with the Lennie Tristano and Buddy Rich bands and whose cool tones were heard on many jazz recordings, died of an apparent heart attack early Friday.

Pianist Ross Tomkins, who was leading a quartet at Donte's in North Hollywood, said Marsh "just slipped off his stool" and collapsed Thursday night. He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank and pronounced dead. Afterward he was seen with Hoagy Carmichael's Teenagers before joining the Army in , when he met Tristano. Although he was a frail man, his determination was unaltered as soon as he stepped on the podium. I would also recommend his recording of Schnittke's third violin concerto with Oleg Kagan. Unfortunately, the sound quality is very poor, especially during the cantata, when the male singers enter. Plus, throughout the entire CD, there is lots of background sound, including what must be the inmates from the local tuberculosis sanatorium sitting in the front row.

All of this detracts somewhat from the music, but not bad enough to justify not buying this album. It is a winding beast, with mezzo-soprano. The text is from a poem by Tsaetaeva. Archie Shepp - St. Louis Blues jazz 1cd eac-flac-cue-log-cover MB Jazz Magnet Allmusic: By the late '90s, Archie Shepp was no longer the revolutionary he once was, but he had established himself as a fine performer of blues, standards, and original pieces.

For this release, he takes his woozy, sometimes breathy tenor in front of an outstanding piano-less rhythm section of bassist Richard Davis and drummer Sunny Murray, with "guest" percussionist Leopoldo Fleming.

All the characteristic Shepp elements are here: the vibrato, the slightly over-emotional renderings of standards "St. Louis Blues" , and the somewhat overextended improvisations. Still, Shepp is a master, and one of the great tenor saxophonists of the 20th century. While there is little here to distinguish this recording from others on which the saxophonist appears except for some great bass work by Davis, particularly on "Total Package," and some equally fine contributions throughout from Murray , the overall feel is one of someone who has absorbed many years of tradition.

Shepp is not quite up to his playing from years ago, and sounds a little tired. His version of "Steam," for example, while perfectly adequate, has better antecedents. While there are superior examples of his playing elsewhere, this recording is nonetheless highly enjoyable. Too, the saxophonist's deep, baritone voice is heard to good effect on "St. Louis Blues," and never fails to impress. Louis Blues" W. Handy Louis Blues. Labels: Archie Shepp , jazz. Leonard Cohen - Field Commander Cohen: Tour of rock 1cd eac-flac-cue-log-cover MB Sony rel: Allmusic: As he'd firmly established himself as a poet and novelist years before he made his first album, Leonard Cohen is often regarded less as a musician than as a writer who happens to sing.

But his songs have always displayed a subtle but mesmerizing melodic sense that dovetails gracefully with his lyrics, and though his craggy voice has its limits, no one else interprets Cohen's songs with his degree of intelligence and quiet passion. In , after the release of his album Recent Songs, Cohen set out on an international concert tour accompanied by members of the jazz-rock group Passenger; Field Commander Cohen was compiled from recordings of the tour, and it presents an especially strong argument for Cohen's gifts as a musician.

Recording date: 25 October , except A1 which was recorded 14 September Recorded in with a thoroughly rehearsed ensemble, the date finds Marsh exploring conventional forms with precision and depth.

Having famously teamed with Lee Konitz for Tristano's sides on Capitol, Marsh enlists alto saxophonist Gary Foster for Ne Plus Ultra; comparisons to Konitz are inevitable, but the less influential Foster is still a force to be reckoned with. His polished tone and fluid lines are so compatible with Marsh's own that one begins to suspect some form of telepathic communication is at work. Warne Marsh - saxophone, tenor. Barry Altschul b.
